Huruma
Net 23 May 2014 - 66 mins "Huruma" is swahili for "compassion", and there was much "ngoma" (swahili for "dance") the evening I dj'd at Bassline in Toronto for a fundraiser for AIDS Care. AIDS Care is a project connected with MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) that collects materials, provides training and puts together kits for volunteers who take care of AIDS patients in sub-saharan African countries like Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Moby's Trip
Net 20 Nov 2011 - 90 mins This mix was inspired by my Mom, specifically these "endless" tapes she used to use to record music for her piano students. The tapes had a mechanism inside that let them loop forever, so you could listen to the same music over and over again. So in the spirit of those old tapes, this deep techy house mix is meant to be listened to on repeat, as the ending is the beginning and the beginning is the ending, and the mix will seamlessly loop forever if you let it. For My Mom
Net 18 Aug 2010 - 39 mins On July 14, my mother passed away from breast cancer. She struggled for 4 years through various chemo and radiation treatments for metastasis, sometimes with a smile on her face and sometimes with a grimace, but always with courage and faith in God. This mix is kind of about that loss. It's neither a tribute or dedication to my Mom, but more of an expression of my feelings. I guess chock it up to part of the mourning process. The tracks are selected for a few different reasons, mostly that they express a particular feeling that I wanted to convey, or they have lyrics (or a snippet of lyric) that I identified with, or in one or two cases, were songs that Mom really liked or were by groups that she loved. So, this being a highly personal dj mix/compilation, I don't expect many to like it or get much out of it. But if you know me, or you knew my Mom, you might catch the narrative that's in the music. Net 11 Nov 2009 - 70 mins Mix #4 from the Free Mix Friday series. This week I decided to try something different and do an entire mix highlighting one of my favourite artists of all time, Quantic. If you've never heard of Quantic (aka Will Holland), then you're in for a treat. Quantic is a diverse and ridiculously talented producer, remixer, dj and multi-instrumentalist. His music carries the echos and influences of the music in the barrios of Brazil, the haciendas of Mexico, the streets of New York, the clubs of Cuba and the dance floors of the UK. He produces music under the Quantic moniker, as well as with his live stage bands, The Quantic Soul Orchestra and his new Combo Bárbaro. Ha'F Speed
Net 07 Aug 2009 - 39 mins While everyone was out in the sun the long August weekend, I was inside, working on a dark, ominous dj mix. Go figure. :) I give you Ha'F Speed, a Dubstep DJ Mix. Inspired to give the genre another look by my man Shazbot (thanks to his excellent "Air Pressure" mix), and anchored around a few choice tracks that stumbled across (and one of which I totally ripped from Shazbot's mix :), I put this little mini-mix together as my own "take" on the music. Whether you're a fan of the genre or newbie, approach it with an open mind and see where it takes ya, from the heartbreak vocals of I Lied to the spanish back alley of In The Death Car. Hello Finland!

I pulled this together for my friend JPuddy when he asked me to put a mix together for his podcast, Homegrown, so I took this opportunity to do a mix in a style that I hadn't done before, quickly changing from one track to the next, scratching and cutting it up between tunes. Dusting Off

Inspired by similar "get it done" mixes from Shazbot (drum 'n bass) and J Puddy (trance/prog house), I sat down without much of a plan in mind and started mixing tracks, and this was the result. Source Material
CD11 2006-07 - 127 mins This mix is a very special one. It marks the release of my 25th mix, a bit of a milestone. So I approached it as such and took a look back over all my favourite tunes from the past 10+ years of djing, the ones that had special meaning or influenced me as a person and dj, and compiled them together into a double disc of house, breaks, trance and drum 'n bass. This mix took me forever. I had a really tough time pulling together the perfect set list, and then figure out how to make the tracks fit together. Later, I hit a road block with the design of the CD package, and much later, I simply lost enthusiasm for the project. Thanks to a special muse, I was able to complete the project and release it. Thanks to all the people who helped me over the years, who supported me in what I love to do, and danced to the tunes I played. Thank you! Funky breaks is the order of the day, winding through a tight mix of both the old and the new with bumping bass lines and catchy samples. What else can I say; it's quality chunking beats with lots of Finger Lickin' action.

A Cup of Coffee
CD 08 Dec 2004 - 75 mins Way back in 2001, I put out a very special mix called A Glass of Water (Tape 08), a deep, seductive little chill out mix that I didn't really think much of while I was making it but everybody seemed to love. A Cup of Coffee is the spiritual succesor to that little mix tape: a smooth morning blend of dub, r 'n b and soul influences left to percolate inside a pot of electronic beats, smooth vocals and thoughtful lyrics. Net 02 Aug 2004 - 53 mins Another internet-only release, this is a very personal mix that had been cooking up inside of me that I just had to stop and lay down once I had all the tracks together. It's a short one, only 53 mins, but packed with some amazing vocal house and broken beat, very reminiscent of the first Orange and Brown CD. Listener beware: if you're offended by bad language, then skip the last track. I took a stab at making an edited version but it just sounded stupid and, for me, compromised the personal nature of the mix.

CD 07 Aug 2003 - 80 mins This sequel to the well-received Orange and Brown Vol 1 (CD 04) picks up on the original's deep and warm house grooves and mixes in some darker, more progressive sounds for the deeper moments of the night. While O&B Vol 1 was perfect for the warm up to your evening, O&B Vol 2 aims to take you out of it, starting out with dirty progressive thumpers and ending somewhere in the middle of the "that was a great night out" euphoria. Car Tape 3
Tape 11 Aug 2002 - 90 mins 3rd release in this fun summer series, and crammed with more crazy tracks. If you have Vol 1 or 2, you know what to expect. If you haven't heard any, then get in on this mix of hair metal, soul, punk, hip hop, chill out and rock. Perfect for road trips and hard to please back seat drivers. Note: I usually don't do a track listing for this series, and I'm not about to make an exception (it just goes against the spirit of the thing), but I'd like to highlight two indie bands that I featured on the tape: Maktub (who's track See Clearly discofies the near-end of Side A) and Mr Brown (who perform Everything is Cool, a nice mid-Side B "breakdown and ponder" track, perfect for midnight drives). Both are excellent bands worthy of your attention, so show some love. |

CD 05 Jan 2002 - 80 mins This a recording of the progressive house set I did for Focus, an internet radio show on (the now defunct) www.beats.to. Originally broadcast on Jan 12, 2002, you used to be able to listen to the set in the Focus archives, but with the site down the mixes have gone down with it. A slow burn groove that goes into banging techier stuff.

Live @ The Warehouse
CD 3.1 & 3.2 Aug 2001 - 120 mins This a pair of live recordings from the Uberzone and Crystal Method concert held at the Warehouse in Toronto. Featured in these sets are Byron Wong on scratches and efx, and Jonathan Gallivan on samples and efx, both of the Toronto-based electronic outfit, My Brilliant Beast. The recordings were handled by the sound crew and put to DAT, but the quality of the recordings wasn't that great, so a big, huge special thanks to Richard Leko of Broomfiller for doing the transfer for me and assisting with some of the editing!
